  • 3 Lucinda Jane Sesler (20 November 1838 - 10 May 1931), married 7 August 1864 at Belle Center, Ohio, to James Faurot (14 March 1837 - 2 October 1914), who was born at Rush Township, Champaign County, Ohio. Lucinda was described by a grandaughter as a small, plump woman with coal black hair and eyes. She smoked a corncob pipe and always wore a white apron. Both she and her husband died at Waynoka Woods, Oklahoma.

Merle Turnipseed, of Washington, Iowa, a descendant of Raybern P. Turnipseed (#6 below) has much information on the Tunipseed descendants of Sanford Carder, and much of the information on Nancy Carder Turnipseed’s descendants is from his records.

  • 1 Sidner Brown Turnipseed (22 October 1845 - 4 May 1916),born at Bloomington, Fayette Co, Ohio, married 13 October 1872 to Nancy Agnes DeLong (1 May 1848 - 28 September 1919). They moved to DeWitt, Nebraska in 1883, to West Plains, Missouri, in 1889, to Belleville, Kansas, in 1891, and to Franklin, Nebraska, in 1904. They are both buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Franklin, Nebraska. They had seven children.
  • 2 Sanford Turnipseed (14 April 1847 - 27 September 1915 ), married19 September 1876, to Cordelia Zortman (3 December 1847 - 28 October 1923). Sanford was killed by a train in 1915. He moved from Washington County, Iowa, to Harp Township, Illinois, in 1873. He later moved to DeWitt, Illinois, in 1887, where he purchased a farm and had one of the best farms in the vicinity. He is buried at the DeWitt, Illinois, Cemetery.
  • 3 Sarah Ellen Turnipseed (29 September 1848 - 22 October 1887), married Alex Brawner, Jr. She is buried at Denver, Colorado.
  • 4 Eliza Jane Turnipseed (13 September 1850 - 4 January 1927), married 18 March 1874 to Richard Wood Bear (18 March 1851 - 15 January 1933). They are both buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Kingman, Kansas. They moved to Kingman, Kansas, and operated the “Bear’s Den” Hotel. Eliza was a faithful member of the Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
  • 5 Cassie Ann Turnipseed (11 April 1852 - 19 November 1937), married on 23 October 1870 to David Fitch Kirkpatrick (15 December 1845 - 10 January 1939). He was born in Bond Co, Illinois. They both are buried at Wellman, Iowa. They set up home near Pilotburg, Iowa, where David taught school in the winter and farmed in the summer. They moved to Sigourney for a year, lived in Kansas one summer, then returned to Iowa and set up a mercantile business at Lexington, Iowa. Two years later they moved back to Pilotburg and had a store there for four years. About 1884 they moved to Wellman, Iowa, whereDavid went into a partnership with his brother-in-law, I.N. Turnipseed and ran a successful business in general merchandise. “Davey Kirk” was a well known champion checker player, and the store was the scene of many checker tournaments, in which he defended his title with skill and honor. Kirkpatrick and Turnipseed had a closing out sale in 1913, due to Turnipseed’s ill health. David then served the town of Wellman as postmaster for eight years. David and Cassie lived to celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary.
  • 6 Raybern Paul Turnipseed (20 March 1854 - 5 December 1935), married 25 January 1876, to Clara Bear (25 January 1859 - 6 October 1949). Clara’s father was from a very strong Baptist family, and he was the force behind the first Baptist church in Richmond, Iowa. After their marriage in Richmond, they lived in Keokuk County for about seven years. They then made their home in the Straw College community, and their children attended the Straw College school. They moved to Washington in 1926. Rabern gave the land where the old Straw College school stood. With the large family, the boys worked on the farm and attended school as time allowed. After they moved to Washington, Grandfather Rabern was a “gentleman farmer”. Most every day he would take a trip to the country to see the progress of farm work on his farms. On the days that Grandmother went along, she had to sit in the center of the back seat of trusty Star to balance the load. They are both buried in Pilotburg Cemetery near Washington, Iowa.
  • 7 Isaac Newton Turnipseed (15 November 1856 - 23 March 1923), married 1 September 1885 in White Pigeon, Iowa, to Mary Belle McBride (21 April 1864 - 26 September 1953). She died in Louisville, Kentucky. He is buried at Iowa City, Iowa. For over forty years he was engaged in the general merchandise business in Wellman, Iowa.
  • 8 Aaron L. Turnipseed (20 September 1858 - 27 August 1938), married first to Alice Furrow, and second to Annie E. _____. Aaron is buried in Rosebud Cemetery, Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
  • 9 Edward Turnipseed (30 September 1861 - 5 October 1945), married first to Eva Works (died 1910), second to Mary Jane McGinnes. Edward and Eva had nine known children.
  • 10 William S. Turnipseed (16 February 1866 - 31 December 1933). He was born in Washington County, Iowa, died in El Paso, Texas, and is buried at Wellman, Iowa. He was unmarried when he died.

  • 2 John Jefferson Wright (12 April 1855 - 7 January 1902), married 30 June 1877, to Emily Francelia Sterling (10 May 1860 - 9 March 1924). He died in Freesoil, Mason Co., Michigan. They had five children
  • 3 George Billingsly Wright (9 May 1864 - 17 February 1941), married Margaret Ann Chirnside. He died in Franklin, Nebraska. They had three children.

  • 3 Susan Merck (13 October 1860 - 9 January 1952), married Frank Carry. They are both buried at Jet, Oklahoma. They had one child.
  • 4 George Merck (1863-1898), married Verna Fuller (d. 1895). They are both buried in Millersburg, Iowa.
  • 5 Andrew Merck (1866 - 1961), married Mary Septer (1880 - 1967). They are both buried in Millersburg, Iowa. They had two children.
  • 6 Loretta Merck (1868 - 1956), married Robert Scott. They are both buried at Coldwater, Comanche County, Kansas.

  • 2 Susan Ionia Carder (14 November 1868 - December 1902), married John B. Carter (16 November 1863 - 27 February 1952). They are buried at Wellman, Iowa.
  • 3 Bessie Carder (4 November 1872 - ), married on 12 November 1892 to Charles Hudson (1868 - 12 November 1902). He is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Keokuk County, Iowa.

  • 3 Myrtle Shocknessy (23 June 1878 - 12 February 1949), married on 10 October 1906, to George Andrew Custer. She was born at Frankfort, Kansas, and died at Englewood, Colorado. She is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Denver, Colorado. A genealogy, Carder Families of Ohio, was compiled by their son Donald Marion Custer in 1968.
  • 4 Ella Shocknessy (26 November 1883 - ), married Edwin Webb. They lived in Weslaco, Texas. They had no children.
