Jacob Carder (1775-after 1860), John Carder (1810-1891), and Sylvester Carder (1822-1872)

Jacob Carder was born about 1775, probably in Culpeper County, Virginia. He first appeared on the records in 1799, when he is listed on the Culpeper County, Virginia, personal property tax lists. He is listed in the same district as James, John, and George Carder. Jacob and John Carder both moved about 1809 to the part of Harrison County, WV, that became Taylor County, WV. Jacob is listed in the tax records of Harrison County as owning tracts of 100 acres and 62 acres on the waters of Booth Creek. Jacob lived in the Booth Creek area of Taylor County until at least 1844, when he sold 145 acres in two tracts on Hustead’s fork of Booth Creek. By 1850, he had moved to Wood County, where he is listed in the census, age 74, as a retired farmer. By 1860, he was in Harrison County, living with George Lawson Carder, who was a grandson of the James Carder who lived near Jacob in Culpeper County in 1799. It is very likely that Jacob, John, and James were brothers. Jacob was possibly the great uncle of George Lawson Carder.

Not much is known about the children of Jacob Carder. It is known that Jacob was married to a lady named Anna (1787-), who is listed as his wife in the 1850 census. He apparently was married earlier, because the death record of his daughter Elizabeth Carder Delong (1815-1853), lists her parents as Jacob and Frances Carder. William F. Carder’s marriage record lists his parents as Jacob and Fanny Carder. In 1844, when he sold his land, he was still married to Fanny.

Based on the census records of Jacob Carder, the following family profile can be put together:

John Carder (1810-1891), probable son of Jacob Carder

John Carder was born about 1810, probably in what is now Taylor County, WV. Due to lack of good records, his parents have not been proven, although he fits in the family profile of Jacob Carder who moved from Culpeper County, VA, to Taylor (Harrison) County, WV in 1809. In 1850 he was living in Wood County, WV, and the only other Carder in Wood County who was old enough to be John’s father is Jacob Carder, born in 1776. Based on the census records, Jacob Carder has an unidentified son the right age to be John Carder. Jacob is the most likely person to be the father of John.

John Carder married on 17 September 1831 in Monongalia County, WV, to Elizabeth Swisher (1811-), who was a daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Bonner) Swisher. He was living in Wood County, WV in 1850, where he was a farmer. John Carder died in April 1891 at West Union, Doddridge County, WV. at age 81.
